DAY 1

Carminho

No music has sung of destiny, fate and the plight of the poor the way fado has, and still instilled such joy and such a wealthy sense of empowerment. In her family, the fado tradition is rich – she is the daughter of fado legend Teresa Siqueira – and at the same time, few singers have updated fado as much in modern times as Carminho. Her debut took both Portugal and the world by storm, it sold platinum in her homeland and the reception internationally was overwhelming. In Brazil in particular, it led to artistic collaboration with some of the country’s greatest, including Milton Nascimento, Chico Barque and Nana Caymmi. Which led to a sophomore effort including meetings between fado and Brazilian treasures such as bossa nova and mpb, as well as contemporary pop. We are immensely proud to, in cooperation with Maxim, be able to welcome Carminho to Stockholm for the first time in over a decade

Ketema Yirga Ethio-Jazz Trio

On Thursday November 7th, Stockholm based Ethio-jazz musician and saxophone player Ketema Yirga, keyboardist John Runefält and drummer Markus Isberg make Café Klotet mutate to a place where the ordinary movement of time ceases and music from pop history metamorphose to jazz in an Ethiopian idiom, at the same time as they make miracles of contemporary pop. Ethio-Jazz has gone from being a completely obscure phenomena for the majority in Sweden to having spellbound more and more music lovers and now becoming a beloved musical tradition. There remains some time before it’s a given part of the soundscape of clubs and bars everywhere, but if anyone can make the transition for us it’s Ketema Yirga. We are very happy to initiate a cooperation with Café Klotet. To frame the night further musically we present a musical meeting of sorts on the turntables; “Schizo Jukebox”!

Schizo Jukebox: Under the umbrella of said name, Selam invites music lovers to mirror each other’s selection. Stockholm culture is rich enough to house many sometimes vastly different musical styles under the same roof at once, and in this guise, we will highlight selectors and deejays who’s tastes are a blessing. For the first outing we present a meeting between Aryam Beyene and Eritrean Anthology in the DJ booth.

Kin’Gongolo Kiniata

Regardless of country, music from Africa is often presented as folklore, old, unchanging and almost primitive. Music from both sides of the river Congo has continually disproved that notion through a frenetic, revolutionary development of styles. The urban sound of Kin’Gongolo Kiniata is no exception; arguably it’s a phenomenon that with more power than any contemporary band from Kinshasa shakes the foundations we take for granted in dance music. An incredibly intense mix of punk, electro, Afro pop and soukous, played on self-made instruments. A staggering soundscape that bursts forth with hectic street life, with lyrics in Lingala against the war that has torn The Congo apart for decades and songs about and homages to itinerant workers. Sounds of hope and despair, this is the next generation of Congolese music. Warm up from the one and only DJ Aïcha.
